The National Security Hour with Edward Haugland discusses the book “Spoils of War” with the author Michael Haywood as part of an American Patriots series, in which I investigate the lives, lessons, and efforts of real Americans who have sacrificed for the security and advancement of our Republic. Americans like Michael Haywood, who support and defend our constitution, believe in America’s values and seek to advance our security for future generations. In this episode, we’ll get Michael’s insights into Russia and today’s environment – to understand the internal workings of Russia, its transition from the Former Soviet Union and a black market economy under the control of oligarchs to today’s continued reality of what I consider a black market economy, where there is a tense truce between Vladimir Putin and the Oligarchs whereby they continue to flourish, as long as they do not oppose, comment, or engage in political opposition to Putin.

Mr. Haywood discusses three specific time frames related to Russia – giving a unique perspective and insights to help understand Russia’s intentions and what may be next. In this episode, we discuss the following:

  •  1991-1999 POST-SOVIET RUSSIA – as we discuss the post-Soviet economy and its realities.
  • 1999-2008 PUTIN’S RISE TO POWER – to include how Putin conducted his own cognitive war on his people to usurp power via a purposefully staged murder of his own people. A lesson and a warning for America in today’s environment.
  • 2008-PRESENT – getting an insider’s assessment of what’s next and insights on the conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s relations with China, and what’s next?

Michael Haywood attended the University of Kentucky on an athletic scholarship and represented NIKE as a post-graduate distance runner. He later enlisted in the US Army and served over 20 years as an Intelligence Officer within the US Special Operations Command, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He spent several years in executive protection before being sent to Moscow in 1997 as the representative of a billionaire who was the biggest investor in Russia following the privatization of the Russian economy. Haywood would spend nearly fifteen years living and working in Moscow. Spoils Of War recounts his experiences and observations as Russia’s post-Soviet history, and Vladimir Putin’s rise to power was determined. SPOILS OF WAR: A Soldier in a Billionaire’s Battles with the Russian Oligarchs Who Placed Vladimir Putin in Power.
