According to traditional Chinese strategic thinking, the acme of war is to conquer without fighting, which could be achieved by multi-domain operations integrated with cognitive dominance. From this perspective, the CCP government strongly encourages the military to innovate the technology and tactics in cognitive intervention.

In one article titled “Cognitive intervention: A new perspective of strategic deception” in the Journal of Intelligence in 2019, senior colonel Gao Jinhu in the People’s Liberation Army wrote: “Using cognitive intervention to implement strategic deception can make the enemy fall into cognitive bias, thinking solidification and decision-making errors. It is an important auxiliary means and serve as a multiplier of national strength, which helps to effectively deal with the new international situation and challenges.”

Briefly, the process of cognitive intervention by CCP is to interfere with the enemies’ cognition using psychological methods based on intelligence, and gradually adjust the tactics depending on the feedback. Finally, it would build self-deception and mislead the enemies as expected.

As a totalitarian regime, CCP has extended the cognition intervention beyond the battlefield to all aspects of society. Domestically, Chinese citizens are the targets of cognition interference from childhood throughout their lives. The government strictly controls education, art, culture, and daily life ideology. People are brainwashed at every given moment by filtering and manipulating information for political purposes. It’s hard to distinguish various types of propaganda without access to genuine information.

Furthermore, without being aware of CCP’s premeditated cognitive interference, the western democratic countries are played by Communist China in a sophisticated manner. One typical example is the origin of the COVID-19 virus. Back in Feb 2020, the nature-origin theory was promoted by the most reputable virologists in the top medical journal LANCET, while the information on illegal wild-animal trading and bat soup in China was quickly spread on social media. Even before the pandemic happened in the US, the majority of Americans already accepted that Chinese people eat so many wild animals to cause the novel zoonotic infectious disease in Wuhan.

Finally, it took three years for people to realize the CCP-lab-origin of the COVID-19 virus and call for accountability. As an unrestricted bioweapon, combined with cognitive interference, the virus has taken over 1 million Americans away in this pandemic.

Compared to China, America focuses on kinetic warfare much more than cognitive warfare. Without deepening reformation and overall improvement in the field of cognition, the US would lose its dominance in the world in future wars.

As one of the best experts in cognitive warfare, Edward Haugland, told me: “Unfortunately, the American officials and military leaders have not fully realized the importance of cognitive warfare yet.”
