The Information Equilibrium - Original Thesis
The Theory of the Information Equilibrium
The Theory of the Information Equilibrium
For some time, I've
noted my intent to publish the basis of my theory. This post does that,
by extracting from my 1996 thesis the basic elements of the theory and its
definition.
I define the Concept of
the Information Equilibrium as:
The transfer of
knowledge, through the use of information based sources, technologies and
services, which leads to an eventual equilibrium of the world's social,
political, and economic situations. Such an equilibrium is based upon the
involvement of the public, private, and non-profit sectors. I use
the word knowledge vice information on purpose. Much information can
be passed on, but it is the formation of the information into useful concepts,
ideas or actions that denotes actual knowledge. The base concept
suggests that if one strives for the greatest access and distribution of
information throughout the world by all peoples, the eventual result will be
the transfusion of knowledge and ideas such that the world's general economic,
social, and political development will move toward an equilibrium.
In the most simple of terms,
the
Theory of the Information Equilibrium proffers that the balance between
societies that advance/advocate for freedom, opportunity, democracy, individual
rights and those that advance dictatorships, tyranny, autocracies, etc. lay in
either the flow or constriction of information in line with the Concept
of the Information Equilibrium.
The more open the flow, the equilibrium will
shift balance towards democracy and freedom; the more constricted the flow of
information the balance shifts towards dictatorships, despots, theocracies,
etc.
There is a paradox in
the battle for humanity in the competing ideologies that either advance the
good of mankind or advance means to control mankind. This theory attempts
to boil that complexity into its most simple form - the millennia battle
between Good vs Evil, where good entails freedoms and evil subjugation. This
post and theory also hopefully advances a means to better understand the
shifting of the equilibrium over thousands of years, and the advance of our
societies from the agrarian, to industrial to information age and beyond were
made possible by the flow or constriction of information in lines with this
theory - but the speed greatly enhanced by technological advances.
As such, our great
American experiment in democracy, is in fact not a guarantee that it
will be forever successful. It remains a continued battle that we cannot
be oblivious to, if we are to avoid shifts that lead us to ills such as
socialism, communism, etc.
Applying this theory
to the Cognitive Domain is critical, if we are to derive solutions that
actually avoid kinetic conflict, advance humanity and peace, and enable
freedoms. Its application from Great Power Competition to addressing the
cycle of frustration is present day Afghanistan is essential if we wish to be
successful.
While not
perfect, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
It is my hope that
scientists of all types, technology leaders, engineers, political scientists,
etc. can leverage this theory to advance humanity, by not only identifying
shifts in the equilibrium, but by also proactively engaging varied solutions to
keeps the balance of the Information Equilibrium tilted towards freedom,
opportunity and independence of the individual to advance peace, mitigate
conflicts, and impede tyranny.
The below graphic
provides, again in the most simple of terms, a means to depict the complexity
of this theory in a manner that is hopefully easy to digest.
